JJ 0455

Our dog intake director spotted JJ on her trips about town. He was always chained out in his yard, and she saw him growing thinner and thinner. When she approached his owner to ask about him, we learned that JJ was the most submissive of the owner's dogs, and the other dogs would not let him eat. JJ was not abused, just badly neglected and in a home situation where he just couldn't fit in... so, he is now with us, looking for just the right new home where he can feel safe and secure, without always wondering if the rest of the pack is about to steal his food.

He is already filling out nicely, and should be about 75#. We think he is a mix of black and yellow labrador retriever, and he was born in December 2005. He is housetrained and well-mannered. He does well on leash and will sit for treats; he seems to enjoy children and is tolerant of cats as long as they stay away from his food. We think he would do wonderfully as an only-dog in a home where he will have lots of attention, whether it is from having someone home with him most of the time, or from having an owner that can bring him to work and on errands. He would also do well with one dog buddy - he has been sharing his foster home with Jager, and they are getting along beautifully.

JJ's foster mom reports that he is a real lover-boy, always wanting permission to lie beside you on the couch or even crawl into your lap (that is one big lap dog!). He doesn't bark much and is a polite passenger in the car, which he has learned means he gets to go with his pack and take doggie hikes. JJ is very sensitive; his original name was Jon Jon, but we changed it to JJ to avoid any negative associations from his former home. When his foster mom sings him "Johnny Angel" he wags and snuggles up to her, awwwww!

JJ prefers to sleep under the bed, or on a dog bed between the bed and the wall; this desire for enclosed, protected space means he might also enjoy having a crate in his new home, where he could "den" when he wanted to. There is a gun range near his foster home, and he hides when he hears gunfire, so loud city noises might take him a while to adjust to.

He waits for permission to eat, even though it isn't required, and he had some negative associations with food and water when he arrived, causing him to "sneak" drinks of water when he thought no one would catch him. After much encouragement and positive reinforcement, he has become more relaxed and open about eating and drinking, but he does still sometimes hesitate to approach the water bowl, as if he is afraid to be chased off at the last minute.

Everyone that meets JJ falls in love with him - unfortunately, so far everyone that meets him already has their full family quota of dogs, so he is still looking for that forever home.

Neuter and all age-appropriate shots are always completed before placement, and are included in the adoption donation (minimum $60; more gratefully accepted!) Can't come to Republic? Don't let that stop you! If you find the pet of your dreams, Forget-Me-Not will find a way to connect you!
